It is not uncommon for parents of transgender people to express grief for a child they perceive as dead, positioning transition as something being ripped away from them. Yet for trans people, genuine grief can exist—a dissonance with childhood and memories shaped by enforced conformity.
In search of proof—file 1 marks the beginning of Nixon’s efforts to reconnect. She détourns archival materials and forensic evidence imagery, showing proof of her own childhood as if shoved in the back of an evidence locker. This struggle to connect is not simply fuelled by dysphoria; it is also a matter of survival. Anti-trans rhetoric makes it impossible. Thus, the child is lost.
What time is there to mourn in a world inciting your genocide? Evidence is abundant, yet the case has gone cold. A dead end. Stowed away, gathering dust.. for now.
